Soda Bread Challenge Press Release

Media Release:

September 2014

Take up the Soda Bread Challenge for National Bread Week

As part of National Bread Week, the first ever week devoted to Irish bread, organiser Flour Confectioners and Bakers Association (FCBA) is challenging bakers to create the largest ever Irish soda bread.

National Bread Week takes place between 13th and 18th October 2014 and is a consumer facing campaign that will encourage everyone to celebrate all that is great about Irish bread, using the call to action ‘Love Your Loaf’. This campaign will see bakers, retailers and wholesalers across Ireland coming together to remind consumers of all the benefits of bread - its taste, value and versatility, as well as the part it plays in a healthy balanced diet. National Bread Week will give the Irish bread industry an opportunity to run on-pack promotions, special offers and in store events to celebrate bread and boost sales too.

FCBA is now calling on bakers participating in National Bread Week to take up the challenge and attempt to make the biggest soda bread possible. First to take up the challenge is FCBA President Patrick McCloskey, who will be taking his soda bread to St Stephen’s Green, Dublin, during National Bread Week (Tuesday 14th October).

Patrick said: “Irish bread has a fantastic heritage and soda bread of course plays a big part in this. What better way to show how fantastic Irish bread is than by having a whole week devoted to it! I’m delighted to accept the challenge of baking the largest ever soda bread and I hope other bakers will have a go too. It will all help raise awareness of Irish bread and remind everyone to ‘Love Your Loaf.”
